This file, which accompanies Fractal Workshop 1.5a, describes the following
book which users of the Atari ST may find interesting:
Title: Computers and Chaos: Atari ST Edition
Author: Conrad Bessant
ISBN: 1-85058-247-5
Price: £12.95
This is the only chaos book dedicated to the ST, so provides unrivalled
practical content and value for money for ST owners interested in the
exciting new science of chaos and fractals. The book is ideal for the beginner,
as everything is dealt with from first principles, and no knowledge of
programming or mathematics is assumed. For the advanced reader the suggestions
for further experimentation will open new areas of challenging and rewarding
investigation.
The book breaks down into nine chapters:
1. Introduction to chaos: what is it? how did it originate?
2. Order and chaos are related: the Sierpinski triangle and Feigenbaum
diagram
3. Weather forecasting and the Lorenz and Rossler attractors
4. The Mandelbrot set: how to produce and zoom into it - details of a huge
number of Mandelbrot 'mutations' such as quasi-Mandelbrots, two-
headed, 3D and anaemic sets also included
5. Julia sets and how to write a program like Fractal Workshop - includes
annotated source code for a Fractal Workshop type program
6. Fractal plants: grass, trees and Koch/C curves
7. Fractal landscapes
8. Cell culture: a few lines of code gives rise to very weird patterns!
9. Applications of chaos: image compression etc.
Appendices include useful information and GFA BASIC routines for saving
pictures in Degas format, producing screen dumps, and for generating
Mandelbrot sets of 1416x1416 resolution on a 24-pin printer.
Chaos history, details of how chaos manifests itself in the real world and
numerous ready-to-run GFA BASIC listings are included throughout the book.
The book's support disk is available separately. It contains all the listings
from the book and GEM-based fractal programs like Fractal Workshop, which
allow experimentation with fractal plants, the Feigenabaum diagram, May
equation and Mandelbrot/Julia sets.
The book is available from all book shops - if you can't find it on the shelves
try asking at the desk. Alternatively, you can order direct from the publishers
by printing out and filling in the order form below and posting it to: Sigma
Press, 1 South Oak Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 6AR, UK (Fax: 0625-536800).
